What is a Thermal Inkjet Printer?

Thermal inkjet printers are both a consumer and commercial grade printing technology that propels droplets of ink by thermally vaporising nozzle chambers (from about 300-1200 nozzles depending on manufacturer) in a 40-42ml cartridge.

Over the past 30+ years, the technology and fluid chemistry has evolved significantly with the capacity to reliably a high-resolution print (Typically 300 or 600 DPI) onto a range of porous and non-porous substrates at ever improving dry times.

Whilst there are many industrial cartridge manufacturers, the two most common platforms are HP and Funai (Formally Lexmark). Both technologies offer varying benefits and the right selection will depend on the printing technology it is integrated with, environment and production requirements.

Unlike alternative inkjet technologies, Thermal Inkjet cartridges are designed for shorter term, single use and are replaced once the ink within is consumed. Note, bulk ink options are available enabling extended utilisation of a single specialised cartridge, this varies depending on the cartridge type.

Thermal Inkjet Vs Other Inkjet Technology Comparison

Whilst it is impossible to accurately compare all thermal inkjet technologies with all alternative inkjet options, the following issues, at the time of writing this indicate our understanding of the benefits and limitations of thermal inkjet. As always, we would be happy to review your production situation to determine which of the following apply, however as an indication:

Advantages

  • Typically, lower hardware cost
  • Generally, a smaller production line footprint
  • If there is an issue with print quality, the cartridges can be easily and swiftly replaced without the need for external technical support

Limitations

  • Typically, higher lifetime consumable cost
  • Generally, does not have the same robustness of more expensive alternatives
  • Product to printhead distance generally needs to be within 5mm (depending on cartridge type)
  • Ink performance is typically not as comprehensive as other inkjet technologies
  • Exceptional print quality with high speed printing abilities
